7 of the Smallest Animal in the World

1. Paedophryne amauensis (Papuan Pocket Frog) 

It's the world's tiniest vertebrate, a frog from New Guinea. It's just 7 millimeters long, so small it can sit on a pencil! 

2. Paedocypris

This fish from Southeast Asia has the world's smallest species, Paedocypris progenetica. Females are about 7.9 millimeters long, and males are even smaller. 

3. Etruscan Shrew

This mammal from Europe, Asia, and Africa is the smallest by weight, only 2 grams. Despite their size, they eat double their weight in insects daily. 

4. Bee Hummingbird 

The smallest bird in the world, found in Cuba. It weighs just 1.8 grams and is about 5 centimeters long. It beats its wings 80 times per second to hover while feeding on nectar. 

5. Kitti's Hog-Nosed Bat 

This bat from Southeast Asia is the smallest by length, only 33 millimeters. It has a pig-like nose and eats insects and spiders. 

6. Speckled Padloper Tortoise 

A tiny tortoise from South Africa, reaching only 3 to 4 inches in length. It's adapted for living in arid regions and burrowing in the sand. 

7. Fairyfly

This group of wasps has some of the smallest insects globally, some only 0.0055 inches long. They are found worldwide and are known for their parasitic lifestyle.
