A really old tooth from an ape tells us about the biggest ape ever, called gigantopithecus blacki. It's like a far-off cousin of the orangutan and was probably about three meters tall! Check out this Newsround gallery to see some of the biggest creatures ever, from a long time ago and today.

Scientists in the US discovered fossilized remains of the largest bird that ever flew. This massive bird, named Pelagornis sandersi, resembled a gigantic seagull.

Right now, African elephants are the biggest land animals. They live about as long as humans and can reach up to 70 years old.

The ostrich holds the title for the biggest living bird. Found in Africa, it boasts the largest eyes among land animals, each measuring 5cm wide.

The Japanese spider crab currently holds the record as the largest living arthropod. Even though the ones today are smaller, a colossal specimen caught in 1921 had an arm-span of 3.8 meters.

Blue whales are the largest animals in history, surpassing even the biggest dinosaurs. They can reach sizes comparable to a jumbo jet!

The largest land mammal in history was Paraceratherium, a relative of today's rhinoceros. It used to munch on the leaves of tall trees.
